Description

Some of my friends on this site are frustrated about have about their lack of art skills which is not true at all. I used to have these frustrations at one point in my life but I never gave up my ambitions in art. One of my ambitions was to draw like the animators at the Hanna Barbara Studios. I used to draw the characters back in my younger days just like many young artists who draw popular characters like Kim possible, Sonic etc. Which why i drew a picture of Velma Dinkley of Scooby Doo, one of the popular characters I used to draw back in the day.

This tutorial was done in Microsoft Paint and this is how I work when I make a base for photoshop.

1. If you notice I start drawing the subject at a small scale in which I grasp the features/attributes from reference pics i download from Google images. I start out with a series of triangles (arms/upper torso) and a diamond (lower torso) to create the basic shape of the human body. Looking at the books of human anatomy helps or sports magazines helps too.

In MS Paint. I use the line tool to sketch the outline of the triangle laden base of the body which forms the shape/figure of Velma. This is done in bitmap format.

2. I then blow up the size of the figure to improve the quality of the picture. If you have a photoshop program load the pic onto it and adjust the brightness/contrast settings to get rid In MS Paint, the larger the picture the better the overall quality. Notice the red lines. The sketching is used as a guide for me to draw over them with the MS Paint's curve tool. This is kinda like tracing, but on a large scale.

3. Use the Paint bucket tool (white in color) to "white out the black sketch lines leaving only the red outline behind.

4. Use the Paint bucket tool again to turn the red outline to black.

5. Coloring is relatively easy. Use the ink drop tool from the original reference pick and simply splash the colors in their places using the paint bucket tool again.

I hope the tutorial may prove helpful to you guys :), but remember. The real power comes from you within your imagination. When creating your own artwork try to improvise. And that's when true talent comes in.

What you see here is the result of years of practice and it is up to you on how you use it. Good art skills cannot be learned overnight and patience is the key to your personal success and a peace of mind. :)
